CHANGING THE WORLD
ONE MOM AT A TIME
Seventy dedicated mother business owners across the United States couldnt agree more with the mission of Little Did I Know.com to "Change the world
one mom at a time." These talented and energetic women are committed to operating their own businesses from home so that may raise and nurture their children. And watch out Corporate America
theyre uniting forces as a part of Little Did I Know.com to promote their businesses and show other mothers how to earn an income from home too!
Little Did I Know.com, an online baby gift retail cooperative founded by, Darcy Volden Miller, in 1999, is the first association of its kind, formally organizing mother business owners to pool resources for national marketing campaigns that would not be possible within the budgets of these small businesses. In addition, these women use Little Did I Know.com to network, swap services and share expertise that would otherwise cost them significant amounts of money if provided by paid consultants. "LDIK has been one of the biggest factors in my companys success. It is difficult being one person trying to introduce a new product into the market, and a number of moms in the group have experience in this area. They have taught me how to work with retailers, generate publicity for the product and most important, remind me that persistence will pay off in the end," says Becca Williams, owner of WallNutz Paint-By-Number Mural Kits. "I dont feel like Im alone in this endeavor. Each mom in this group benefits when another mom succeeds."
Their first coordinated effort along with Box-is.com, "The Mother of All Box-is" is about five beautiful (and enormous!) boxes filled with hundreds of products from these mother-owned and operated businesses. The moms are making a bid to be featured on the nationally syndicated Oprah and Rosie ODonnell talk shows by forming a powerful coalition. After the boxes and contents serve their publicity generating purpose, the moms are asking Oprah and Rosie to donate the products to their favorite childrens charities.
According to Miller, "If we can touch the life of one child by helping even just one mother to be successful with her business then weve accomplished our mission. It is an opportunity like the Oprah and Rosie show that will truly allow us to help many."
"The Mother of All Box-is" concept and artwork was designed by Nancy Cleary, mother business owner of Wyatt-MacKenzie Publishing and creator of Box-is.com. Cleary states, "The opportunity to work together with Little Did I Know on this project was monumental. We were able to bring to life a shared philosophy of helping women to define their dreams, what they love to do, and provide the resources, tools and inspiration and support to make those dreams come true."
LDIK products were featured on the Oprah Show which aired March 2000 for the topic "Women Who Love Their Jobs". Founder Darcy Volden Miller was also highlighted in the November 2000 edition of BabyTalk Magazine, selected as "Mompreneur of the Month" by iVillage.com and will appear in several new books including the next Mompreneurs Online in addition to HerVenture.com, DotCom Moms and Generation Mom all due out 2001.
